shake the kiss from your fingertips,
and i won't watch you walk away.
but i hope you'll be watching me.
my steps stick to the pavement in the anxious streets of summer.
these are things i would forget if i didn't write them down.
whoever turned your compass south, anyhow?
i'm exhausted for all the wrong reasons,
as the summer weeds begin to grow.
tie your fingers in a knot before god.
and if you don't love me, don't let me know.
in brief, in passing, leave and leave me asking.
i'm a stranger more than less, we are thieves in summer sweat,
asking penance for things i must confess.
draw the blinds, trace the trail of power lines.
day by day, brick by brick,
a rain of sand, a tallied year.
the times they are a changing,
everywhere but here.
count on your fingers, count on your toes.
count on me to make my exit before the curtains draw closed.
god forbid a little effort was of need.
i nod true and strain a sigh between my teeth.
i point the blame into the mirror and then retreat.
so go ahead and make your escape.
i've been alone a lot longer girl than i was anything with you.
between the white and yellow lines,
i'll be waiting patient,
like i always do.
